West Highland White Terrier
The West Highland White Terrier, more commonly known as the Westie, is a small but sturdy terrier famous for its bright white coat, alert expression, and lively, confident personality. Westies are often cheerful, curious, and full of character, with the boldness and self-assurance people expect from a true terrier. Though compact in size, they are not delicate in temperament. A good Westie usually carries itself with independence, energy, and a ready interest in everything happening around it.
The breed originated in Scotland and belongs to the family of terriers developed in the Highlands for practical hunting work. AKC and West Highland White Terrier Club of America history materials trace the breed to white terriers bred to hunt foxes, badgers, and vermin in rugged country where a small, tough, earth-working dog was especially valuable. The breed was officially listed as the West Highland White Terrier in 1907 at Crufts in England, and the AKC first registered the breed in 1908. Its distinctive white coat was especially useful because it made the dog easier to distinguish in the field.
Today, the Westie is best known as a lively companion dog, but it still carries the instincts and attitude of its working past. Westies tend to be alert, entertaining, and strongly engaged with their households, while still retaining a terrier's independent streak. They do well with regular activity, patient training, and owners who appreciate a small dog with a lot of spark and determination. For many people, the Westie's enduring appeal comes from that combination of charm, hardiness, and classic terrier personality wrapped in a compact, unmistakably stylish package.
