Havanese
The Havanese is a small, cheerful companion breed known for a springy gait, expressive eyes, and a warm, sociable temperament. These dogs are often lively without being frantic and affectionate without being overly demanding. Havanese tend to thrive on human company and are especially appealing to people who want a smaller dog that is outgoing, charming, and closely involved in everyday household life.
The breed is the only dog breed native to Cuba and belongs to the bichon family. AKC and Havanese Club of America history materials trace the breed back to dogs descended from the Tenerife dog and other small companion types that made their way to Cuba centuries ago. Later political upheaval nearly erased the breed in its homeland, but exile families preserved it and helped ensure its survival.
Today, the Havanese is popular with urban and suburban owners who want a compact companion with a happy disposition and a little flair. The breed is adaptable and often very people-centered, but it does require grooming and regular interaction. Havanese are not usually happiest when left alone for long periods or treated as mere ornaments. For owners who enjoy a bright, engaging small dog with a fascinating cultural history, the Havanese is one of the most appealing toy breeds in the country.
