Beagle
The Beagle is a small to medium-sized scent hound known for its merry personality, soulful expression, and excellent nose. Compact, sturdy, and full of life, the breed has long been loved in the United States as both a hunting dog and a family companion. Beagles are typically social, curious, and energetic, and because they were developed to work in packs, they often enjoy companionship from both people and other dogs.
The breed's roots run deep. The National Beagle Club of America traces Beagle-type hounds back many centuries, with small hare-hunting dogs documented in ancient Greece and later in Britain, and notes that the Beagle was well established by the fifteenth century in parts of Europe and England. AKC history materials add that the breed became firmly established in America in the 1880s, with a Beagle named Blunder becoming the first AKC-registered Beagle in 1885. Historically, the Beagle's main purpose was to track rabbits and hares by scent while hunters followed on foot.
That scent-hound heritage still defines the modern Beagle. It is friendly, funny, and appealingly expressive, but it is also driven by smell, prone to following its nose, and happiest when given activity and companionship. Beagles can be excellent family dogs, especially in active homes, but they are not always as easy as their sweet faces suggest. Their stamina, vocal nature, and independent hound instincts mean they do best with patient training, secure fencing, and owners who understand that once a Beagle catches a scent, the world can briefly disappear around it.
