Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular dogs in the United States, admired for friendliness, intelligence, trainability, and all-around versatility. Medium-large and athletic, the Lab combines working-dog ability with a warm, approachable personality that has made it a favorite in families, service work, field sports, and community life. Labs are often sociable, eager to please, and genuinely enthusiastic about being involved in whatever their people are doing.
Despite the name, the breed's roots lie in Newfoundland, where the ancestors of the modern Labrador worked as water dogs and fishermen's helpers. AKC history and Labrador club references describe the breed as the traditional waterdog of Newfoundland, later refined in Britain into an excellent retriever. This background explains why the Labrador still tends to love water, movement, and useful activity rather than merely lounging as a passive pet.
Today, the Labrador Retriever succeeds in an enormous range of roles, from family companion to guide dog to hunting partner. Its biggest strengths are friendliness, adaptability, and a desire to work with people. At the same time, Labs do best when given exercise, training, and clear routines. Without enough of those things, they can become rowdy, bored, or overweight. For many Americans, though, the Labrador represents something close to the ideal modern dog: capable, loving, and endlessly willing to join the life of the household.
