This special American Spotlight feature explores the most popular dog breeds in every state, offering a closer look at the companions that so many people welcome into their homes and hearts. I am including this section because I am developing a new song idea about dogs, what they mean to us, and how their presence has grown into a beloved cultural phenomenon across a wide swath of the United States.

Boonie Dogs (Mixed Breeds): Guam's best-known dogs are often called Boonie Dogs, sometimes described as the island's "super mutts." They frequently include mixes of German Shepherds, Beagles, Labrador Retrievers, Dobermans, Greyhounds, Corgis, and Chihuahuas.
Shih Tzu: This breed is often cited as one of the most popular small companion dogs on the island.
Maltese: Another very popular small breed, especially valued for companionship and grooming appeal.
Pit Bulls: Pit Bulls are also commonly found in Guam and are favored by many residents.

Key Facts About Dogs in Guam:

Boonies are often regarded, for all practical purposes, as a locally recognized island type because of their prevalence and distinctive characteristics.
Many Boonie dogs are rescued, with organizations such as the Boonie Flight Project helping transport them off the island for adoption.
Pit Bulls are especially common, although local shelters and rescue groups continue to face challenges related to Guam's large stray-dog population.

Top Dog Breeds and Types in Puerto Rico:

Satos (Puerto Rican Street Dogs): Satos are the most widely recognized dogs in Puerto Rico, known for their adaptability, intelligence, and affectionate nature. They are usually small to medium in size and show strong genetic diversity.
Puerto Rican Village Dogs: These free-ranging, free-breeding island dogs are known for their street smarts and their varied, non-uniform appearance.
Gran Mastin de Borinquen (Puerto Rican Mastiff): This is a rare native breed associated with guarding work and believed to descend from Spanish mastiffs brought to the island in the sixteenth century.

American Pit Bull Terrier / Bully Breeds: These dogs are also very common and are often valued for their intelligence, strength, and adaptability.
"Coconut Retrievers": This affectionate regional nickname is sometimes used for mixed-breed island dogs, especially those that resemble retrievers or hounds.
Caribbean Shepherds / Pothounds: These resilient mixed dogs are often seen serving as watchful household guardians.
Popular Mainland Breeds: Breeds commonly brought from the U.S. mainland include Labradors, German Shepherds, and Chihuahuas.

Key Considerations for Dogs in the U.S. Virgin Islands:
