Terrier

The term "Terrier" refers not to one single breed but to a broad family of dogs historically developed for grit, courage, alertness, and vermin control. Terrier breeds are often compact, quick, sharp-minded, and intensely expressive. Whether small or medium in size, they tend to share a sense of boldness that makes them seem larger than life. That spirited attitude is a major part of what people love about terriers.

AKC group materials explain that terriers were developed primarily to hunt vermin and, in many cases, to pursue quarry into tight underground spaces. The group includes a wide range of dogs, but many were shaped in the British Isles and former English colonies, with coat type, body structure, and style of work reflecting local terrain and needs. Even today, many terriers retain the independence, bark, curiosity, and determination that once made them indispensable farm and earth dogs.

As a modern category, terriers appeal to owners who want a dog with spark, personality, and attitude. They are often lively companions and excellent watchdogs, but they can also be stubborn, prey-driven, and more intense than their size suggests. A terrier is seldom bland. For people who enjoy a dog with confidence and character, the terrier family offers some of the most entertaining and memorable companions in the canine world.
